ID card applications can only be submitted in person at the embassy or consulate general responsible for your home country during opening hours after prior online appointment. The ID cards are printed at the Bundesdruckerei in Berlin. Please allow a maximum processing time of 4-6 weeks. If a name declaration is required (see information below), the processing time may change significantly. The validity of the German identity card is 6 years for applicants under the age of 24, otherwise 10 years for older applicants. From the age of 16, the German identity card can be applied for independently and without the consent of the legal guardian.

Application for a new identity card
The following original documents are required:

Your current passport and/or identity card (or a police report of loss/theft in the event of loss/theft)
Birth certificate (British certificates long version with apostille, documents from other countries see “Related links”: Authentican / Legalisation)
Proof of Austrian citizenship
Marriage certificate and/or Divorce decree, if applicable (British documents if apostille, documents from other countries see “Related links”: Notarization / Certification)
Proof of residence (e.g. electricity/gas bill; not older than 3 months)
1 recent passport photo, not older than 6 months , in accordance with EU passport photo criteria
Debit card fee GBP 53.40 (month April 2021)
Debit card fee GBP 23.30 (month April 2021) for children under 16 years old.
